The Costa Rica News (TCRN) โ€“ Hundreds of evangelical Christians and Catholics marched yesterday along Main Avenue, in San Jose, to defend the family arrangement โ€œaccording to Godโ€™s designโ€, and to protest against abortion, homosexuality, in vitro fertilization and euthanasia, which they consider โ€œthreatsโ€.

Using banners and Christian music, protesters walked several blocks to show the importance of โ€œrescuing the traditional family arrangement.โ€ โ€œAbortion is a crime committed by cowardsโ€, โ€œGod is never wrongโ€, โ€œGod guides our familiesโ€, โ€œChildren are a gift from God, not a rightโ€ and โ€œMarriage is the foundation of societyโ€ were slogans of some banners.

โ€œWe are here to defend the family arrangement constituted by a man and a woman,โ€ said Laura Fernandez, one of the protesters. Julio Gollenaga, member of the organizing committee of the event, said that this โ€œmovement is trying to foster a different Costa Rica.โ€ โ€œThose of us who love families want them according to the model of God,โ€ he said. At the end of the march the participants enjoyed a concert of religious music and made a prayer.

On the other hand, The Diversity Movement, which represents Costa Ricaยดs gay community, considered that this event โ€œcontains a homophobic tone that promotes discrimination against the families they represent and even against other types of families which do not fall under the definition of ยดtraditional familyยด.โ€ Some weeks ago the Costa Rican gay community had the traditional โ€œGay Pride Marchโ€, which was attended by many people, and the week before several couples of men appealed to courts asking for legal recognition of their unions.

In addition, the Costa Rican Congress has been debating, by order of the Court of Human Rights, a bill to re-enable in vitro fertilization in the country, prohibited by the Constitutional Chamber since 2000. EFE
