The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The former commander Eden Pastora, commissioned by the Nicaraguan government for dredging of the San Juan river, entered the list of persons wanted by the International Police (Interpol) at the request of Costa Rica, officials said.
The Costa Rican Vice Minister of Security, Celso Gamboa, confirmed to reporters that Pastora is required to appear by Costa Rican courts when Interpol triggered an international arrest warrant.
Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla, declined to pursue the subject, but said in a press conference after the weekly cabinet meeting that “if there is a crime for which (Pastora) needs to answer, our authorities will have an answer”.
Pastora was charged in Costa Rica in 2010 on charges of violation of the Forest Act, and encroachment on public property. That year he was summoned to appear to testify, but he did not.
Pastora will be arrested if he leaves Nicaragua.
This case concerns the alleged invasion of a portion of Costa Rican territory near the Caribbean coast led by Pastora Nicaragua as part of the dredging of the San Juan River border, which is of Nicaraguan sovereignty .
In late 2010, Costa Rica sued Nicaragua for causing damage to a wetland protected by international conventions and for cutting down forest to open the spout. (EFE)
