The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – An officer of the Canine Unit of the Ministry of Public Security detected at four in the morning today, $68,204 at a highway checkpoint located at kilometer 35 of the Inter-American Highway.

The dog located the hidden money between the front seats of a 4 × 4 vehicle driven by Costa Rican Morales Gonzalez and Morantes Palacios, both from Puntarenas.

The security forces found three packages wrapped in plastic and duct tape, gray color, so they coordinated with the Drug Control Police (PCD) of the Ministry of Public Security.

The narcotics officers counted the money for a total of 68,204 U.S. dollars, which are of dubious origin.

In Costa Rica the law on narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, unauthorized drugs, related activities, money laundering and terrorism financing in Article 15bis provides that:

“The physical and legal persons engaged other than those referred to in Articles 14 and 15 of this Act economic activities shall communicate to the FIU, the Costa Rican Institute on Drugs, commercial transactions performed repeatedly and cash, including transfers from outside or to him, in national or foreign currency, equal to or exceeding ten thousand dollars currency of the United States of America (U.S. $ 10,000.00) or its equivalent in colones.”
