The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – New decrees will provide regulatory frameworks for the protection of coral reefs and map out guidelines for determining the creation of artificial reefs for the Deputy Minister of Internal Waters and Oceans.

Jaqueline Wong, technical advisor to the office of the Deputy Minister of Water and Oceans, said that the proposed decree provides measures for the preservation and conservation of coral reefs and marine communities.

Wong said that this legislation is intended to summarize a single legal standard on the conservation and preservation of these marine ecosystems, since the current policy of protection for coral reefs is distributed thoughout various regulations.

In the case of artificial reefs, the document establishes the materials supported for installation of the reefs, the type of structures that would be permitted by the state and the location of a tool that can monitor fish populations.
