First Cruise Boat in Puntarenas Marks the Beginning of the Travel Season

    The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The cruise season in the Costa Rican Pacific began with the arrival of Carnival’s Legend (with a capacity for 2,680 passengers and 930 crew) enjoying a few hours in Puntarenas.

    To Wilhelm von Breymann, Minister of Tourism, the arrival of this cruise marks the cruise season in the Pacific Pearl.

    “We started the necessary actions to ensure the country’s position as a cruise destination with quality service, in aspects such as training to various entrepreneurs and tour operators, transporters, artisans, among and other infrastructure improvements,” he said.

    The Legend cruise ship travels a route from Colombia including Cartagena, Puntarenas in Costa Rica and San Lucas in Mexico.

    According to the survey conducted by Cruise 2012- 2013 ICT, almost 80% of cruise passengers arriving in Puntarenas travel in pairs, have an average cost of $63 per person and are mainly from the United States and Canada.

    In addition to local music, food, fashion and dance, the primary aim of the new cruise initiative is to increase competitiveness, quality of products and add value to the experiences lived by domestic tourists, foreigners and cruise passengers in the ports of country.

    Another objective is to provide entrepreneurship opportunities for local entrepreneurs who are in the tourism industry.
