The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – On the first day of the Reef Classic 2014, nine of the 10 Tico surfers who took to the water qualified for the next round.

About a thousand people gathered at Playa Hermosa to see firsthand the best surfers in Latin America for the first day of four for the competition.

Carlos Muñoz, Alberto Muñoz, Gilberth Brown, Leonardo Calvo, Maikol Torres, Juan Carlos Naranjo, Diego Orange, Isaac Vega and Federico Pilurzo all qualified Costa Rica for the next level.

The best score for Costa Rica was Carlos Muñoz who reached 12.30, among the highest of the day.

“There is some pressure being at home because you want to do well for the people who support you from the beach. I came very tired coming from Indonesia, but I managed to advance. What is important now is to rest, recharge my batteries and tomorrow continue at the same pace to move forward,” Munoz said.

The competition started with the participation of 132 competitors, of whom 80 are Open Longboard,  12 women, and 28 Pro Junior (Under 21).

Playa Hermosa in Jaco offered perfect waves for the competition.
