The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Costa Rican government has announced that the nomination was accepted by the Secretary of the World Heritage Centre of UNESCO for the pre-Columbian archaeological sphere sites to be declared as a cultural heritage of humanity.

The area is formally called the Columbian Settlements Chiefdom, covering four sites: Batambal, Villa 6, Grijalva and El Silencio, located in the canton of Osa all of which have Diquís stone spheres.

To accomplish this step, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) undertook a technical report, which recommends that Unesco accept the nomination. Since 2013 the request has been pending.

President Laura Chinchilla, who made the announcement, said that Unesco is not far from the criteria of that organization. Therefore there is a high probability that they accept.

Unesco’s decision whether sites are World Heritage areas or not will be announced in June, at a meeting in Qatar. Chinchilla added that it is a legacy for the country and contributes to the cultural heritage.

The director of the National Museum, Christian Kandler, explained that in September ICOMOS visited the country to review the settlement.

Culture Minister, Manuel Obregón, said that the appointment of this potential cultural heritage site opens the door to other possible candidates, such as the Old Town of Liberia and the Caribbean Cultural Corridor.
