The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Central America aims to save at least $400 million per year through an initiative arising from the use of energy efficient light bulbs for residential use, said the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica (MINAE).

The “Efficient Lighting Strategy in Central America”, presented today in San Jose, included regional actions such as establishing minimum energy efficiency standards governing the use of light bulbs and lamps meet that met the approval of such standards, said MINAE a statement.

In addition, the initiative will ban the import and sale of lamps that are not approved and the creation of a regional labeling system on efficient lighting, among other things.

This strategy, which is expected to start next year, includes Panama, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

According to estimates, the Mesoamerica Project will allow the reduction of 2,575 gigawatt hours per year, which would save about $400 million, and a reduction of about 900 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

“We hope that this regional strategy in the residential sector is just the beginning and can soon be replicated in other areas such as commercial lighting and industrial lighting,” said Vice Chancellor and Commissioner for the Costa Rica Mesoamerica Project, Gioconda Ubeda.ย (EFE)
