The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Some 9,623 turtle eggs were seized by law enforcement in Guanacaste, which is one of the largest seizures this year in the country.

As reported by the regional director of the police force, Rigoberto Rodriguez, they currently have operations in Ostional Beach, county of Santa Cruz, as well as other surrounding areas due to the arrival of green turtles that occur in this beach.

Thanks to a patrol on Tuesday afternoon, specifically Bejuco Beach, delegation officials located two women, one adult and one 15-year-old, who were holding 223 turtle eggs and immediately confiscated them.

The adult was identified with the surname Monge and was referred to the prosecution of Santa Cruz, while the younger woman was directed to the juvenile criminal prosecution of Nicoya.

The other 9,000 eggs were confiscated on Tuesday evening when members of the Nicoya security forces conducted a roadblock at the junction of Pedregal.

At that site the police spotted a Nissan Sentra, whose driver acted very suspicious and then sped away in order to evade arrest.

After a chase of over three miles, the car was finally intercepted and searched. There, located in the trunk of the vehicle, were 9,400 turtle eggs.

The driver of the car, a man surnamed Sequeira was arrested, and his companion, a man surnamed Matarrita was also arrested and both are set for prosecution in Santa Cruz.
