Did you know Most tampons and pads are made with rayon, filled with toxic fragrances, and bleached with chlorine? From deodorant to cleaning products, the chemicals we spread and spray onto our bodies and around our homes are a growing area of concern for our health. In particular, a group of chemicals referred to as “endocrine disruptors” as they may mess with hormones and your body’s endocrine system. This has been linked to brain disorders, obesity, reproductives issues, and cancer.

Tampons are super absorbent fibers that get absorb not only the menstrual blood, but normal vaginal secretions as well, causing drying, and ulceration of vaginal tissues. The fibers can also become embedded in the vaginal walls. Rayon fibers have been scientifically proven to amplify the production of Toxic Shock Syndrome Toxin TSST1.
Toxic Shock Syndrome is a common bacterial illness that caused over 50 deaths between 1979 and 1980. Unlike medical-grade cotton, upon which the TSS toxin will not grow, the rayon acts like a petri dish encouraging bacterial growth. What makes these toxic residues even more disturbing, is that they come in direct contact with some of the most absorbent tissue in a woman’s body.
Organic Tampons & PadsGlyphosate, a widespread herbicide that has been linked to cancer by the World Health Organization’s cancer research arm, was detected in 85 percent of cotton hygiene products tested in a preliminary study from researchers at the University of La Plata in Argentina.
Why is it acceptable to have toxic substances in our feminine hygiene products? Why are we paying hundreds of dollars to the tampon industry to harm our bodies? We seem to think that this as “pure” and “clean” way of collecting our blood. A woman uses as many as 11,000 tampons in her lifetime, and this could in the long term cause our increase risk of cancer. My intention is to bring awareness on this subject to all women and young girls.
Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all female cancers. Just over 300 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in B.C. and about 200 die from it each year. There are about 750 cases of uterine cancer and just over 100 deaths per year.

What can you do, then? There are a few options: you can opt for organic tampons, which shouldn’t be sprayed with the herbicide, or try using a menstrual cup or sea sponge. You can purchase these products at Mama Toucan’s in Dominical or order them online.
We can only hope that this leads to a change in production or manufacturing since nearly half of the Earth’s human population is placing these products inside their bodies.
Menstrual Cups
“A new study at the University of La Plata found just that: 85% of cotton products like gauze, cotton balls, swabs, pads, wipes, etc. tested positive for glyphosate. Another 62% tested positive for its environmental metabolite AMPA, which has been found to potentially be 1,000 times more toxic in the body. Gauze samples tested positive 100% of the time.
Let’s get down to brass tacks, as they say. While all of these things are used in places like cuts, or to clean your ears or even wipe your baby’s bottom, when it comes to feminine “protection” products, they are placed in a highly sensitive mucous membrane area near a woman’s cervix and her reproductive organs for hours at a time. How often is a potentially harmful chemical seeping into your body this way, ladies?
And we wonder why infertility is on the rise in this country. Unless these products explicitly state they are made from organic cotton, it’s a safe bet to assume they are genetically modified. Because over 90% of the cotton here is GMO, if this study is any indication, its very likely tainted with glyphosate!
It’s such a common-sense connection, and yet, until I read about this study, I will admit to you I hadn’t really considered it. The study also found that 90% of the residents tested positive for glyphosate in their urine even though none of the people tested had direct contact with Roundup products.
Of course, you’ll probably never hear about this in the media here, in the country where corporations and lobbyists run everything and where Monsanto, whose #1 best-selling product Roundup with the key ingredient glyphosate, has its world headquarters stationed…”
