‘Tis the Season…For Increased Checkpoints and Police Presence in Costa Rica

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – A total of 726 traffic officers are scheduled to be distributed throughout Costa Rica to ensure road safety during December, especially around Christmas and New Years, an official said today.

The aim of the Traffic Police for the month of December is to prevent the high number of deaths (34) that occurred in the same month of 2013, said the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) in a press release.

“Each checkpoint we do or ticket we issue, it’s not a repressive action by the police; on the contrary, every drunk driver who thinks twice before getting on the road is potentially life saving,” said the director of Traffic Police, Mario Calderon, in the bulletin.

The police controls and intensified presence will be focused between December 1 and 24 for the Christmas season, including New Years celebrations.

Traffic Police are asking holiday shoppers to drive carefully and be cautions in the major cities in the country.  They also suggested that shoppers should keep a close eye on their packages.

For those traveling outside the capital to the beach or other vacation spot, drivers should make sure their vehicles and credentials are in order before leaving. (ACAN-EFE)
