We have all heard of the impending Galactic event that will take place December 21 of this year. That’s the date where we will either experience an apocalyptic event or some physical and/or metaphysical event. Whether you believe or not there are some interesting elements to the 2012 phenomenon.

The subject is vast with many experts writing many interpretive books, and as well much has been published by the scientific community to shed some reality on the phenomenon, here is a quick look into the 2012 phenomenon.

    What is it?

The 2012 Phenomenon is a widespread belief based on an ancient Mayan calendar system, which some believe marks apocalyptic event, the end of the world, that will transpire on the day of the solstice December 21, 2012 bringing the end of civilization as we know it and the beginning of another.

It is based on one of the Mayan calendars called the long count calendar which ends its 5125 year cycle December 21.

Apart from the apocalyptic believers, there are those “experts” that suggest that the world will experience a physical and meta-physical transformation that would usher in the beginning of a new age for mankind.

    26,000 year Galactic Alignment

The Galactic Alignment is when the Mayan long count calendars’ 5125 year cycle ends on December 21, 2012 and is also accompanied by another significant event when the Earth passes through the Milky Way’s galactic equator. This Galactic Alignment occurs only once every 26,000 years.

What is interesting is the skill in which the Mayan priests calculated this long count calendar so precisely. The “zero date” long count was calculated on August 11 of 3114. BC.

    Time Acceleration

The Mayan system has marked different ages called the Nine Underworlds. Each one getting shorter in duration that the preceding one. (Listed below)

What’s interesting here is the concept of time acceleration theory. We are right now in the last cycle called the Universal Underworld and it is 260 days. The same amount of change that occurred in the preceding cycle called the Galactic Underworld with 12.8 years will happen in our current much shorter 260 day final cycle.

The first cycle or age was 16.4 billion years; the next 820 million years and so on… the next cycle experiences the same amount of change in a shorter period of time.

And when you think about the past few decades, thing truly do seem to be speeding up. Escalating population rates, growing, consuming, warring, hectic fast passed lives with fiscal cliffs, burning towers, climate change, extreme weather, earth quakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, longer work days, technological advancement happen so fast we can’t keep up like remote control robots on mars, stress, stress and more stress, collapsing markets, recessions, pandemic threats…

Here are the Nine Underworlds or ages:

Universal Underworld – 260 days Cosmic
Galactic Underworld – 12.8 years Galactic
Planetary Underworld – 256 years Global
National Underworld – 5,125 years Civilized
Regional Underworld – 102,000 years Human
Tribal Underworld – 2 million years Hominid
Familial Underworld – 42 million years Anthropoid
Mammalian Underworld – 820 million years Mammalian
Cellular Underworld – 16.4 billion years Cellular
(From The Mayan Code, By Barbara Hand Clow)

Going back to my first early point about the skill it took calculate such vast time scales by just looking into the night sky with their naked eye. Did the Maya have optical telescopes? Or telescopes of any sort? No evidence has thus far been found that they did.

It wasn’t until the 17th Century, that Galileo, using one of the earliest optical telescopes observed the moons of Jupiter.

It wasn’t until the late 1700’s that William Herschel attempted to observe the shape of the Milky Way. How is it possible that thousands of years earlier the ancestors of the Mayans were calculating when the earth would pass through the Galactic Equator?

Venus held a particular fascination to the Mayans. They were able to determined the period it took Venus to orbit the sun, 584 days, which is incredibly close to the actual orbit period of 583.92 days.

There has been a great deal of evidence by the scientific community that has debunked many of the myths, legends and theories of the 2012 Phenomenon but that does not seem to dissuade the “believers”. Some estimate that over 1 million people believe in the 2012 end of the world event while others estimate there is less than 300,000, either way there seems to be a lot of believers. As for me, I can’t say I’m a believer but I’m looking forward to going to a 2012 Doomsday Party here in Costa Rica!
