Outraged Environmentalists are Rallying on Thursday to Protest the Acquittal Verdict in the Jairo Mora Murder Trial

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Environmental groups will gather on Thursday, January 29 to rally against the San José courts for a ruling that acquitted seven men accused of the killing environmentalist Jairo Mora.

According to the president of the Environmental Federation , Mauricio Alvarez, the Court of Judicial Inspection is at fault and these men should not be allowed to walk away free.

The judge in charge, Yolanda Alvarado, said Monday during sentencing that one of the reasons for the acquittal were the errors by the Prosecution and Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) in the handling of evidence.

According to a study by the British organization Global Witness, between 2002 and 2013, 908 people were killed in throughout the world while trying to protect the environment; among them is Jairo Mora.

Mora was killed on May 31, 2013 in Moin, when he was ambushed by several masked men while tending to leatherback sea turtle nests. (Amelia Rueda)
