The Costa Rica News (TCRN) โ Prosecutors in Costa Rica have opened an investigation into the countryโs soccer federation president Eduardo Li who was among seven FIFA executives arrested on corruption charges in Switzerland on Wednesday by the United States.
Costa Rica opened its own investigation on Eduardo Li for his role in the scandal. Eduardo Li played a significant role in the national teamโs recent quarter finals position in the World Cup in Brazil.
Just two days before the FIFA Congress were to meet in Switzerland; U.S. officials swooped in and arrested a total nine FIFA officials and five corporate executives, including Eduardo Li. They have all been indicted on corruption, bribery and money laundering charges.
Costa Ricaโs public prosecutorโs spokesperson said โThe investigation opened today aims to determine whether the hypothesis of the U.S. Department of Justice probe related to a case of money laundering and corruption involving Eduardo Liโฆ can be corroborated.โ
Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solis expressed his surprise to reporters of the news of Eduardo Li arrest and that he does not want the incident to โhurtโ Costa Rica.
