2016 Global Peace Index: Costa Rica is the best country located in Central America and the Caribbean

The 2016 Global Peace Index (GPI, for its acronym in English) prepared by the Institute for Economics and Peace, puts Costa Rica as the best qualified country in Central America and the Caribbean.

The report, which was released this week, places our country at number 33 of the 162 countries ranked worldwide.

Costa Rica is one of only 10 countries free of external or internal conflicts, sharing this accomplishment with Botswana, Chile, Japan, Mauritius, Panama, Qatar, Switzerland, Uruguay and Vietnam, explaining one of the reasons for its high position in the GPI.

In spite of the good evaluations obtained by ranking the country in 2016, Costa Rica dropped a place compared to the previous year when it stood at number 32.

According to the latest report, about 80 countries were “more peaceful” while the situation worsened in 79 nations over the past year.

The top five countries located in the Global Peace Index are Iceland, Denmark, Austria, New Zealand and Portugal. While Syria, South Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia are the worst becuase of their location, due to armed conflicts in which they are immersed.
