Honey Import Doubled Due to Environmental Changes

The few rains and strong winds have affected the Honey production in Costa Rica; this situation endangers to the apiaries (bee keepers) owners and dealers of honey. For that reason, Honey imports significantly increased to meet consumer demand in Costa Rica.

In 2014, the value of honey imports closed at $817,500 or 120% more than 2013, an increase of $445.800, according to the Foreign Trade Promoter (Procomer).

Corporation Agroindustrial Companies CCA (Wallmart) and Pacific Apiaries are the leaders importing this product to Costa Rica, although last year Manza Tea has joined to the importers list.

Meanwhile, bee keepers are very concerned and are looking at possible solutions to improve local production, said Carlos Zamora, executive director of the National Chamber of Development of Apiculture (Canafapi).
