Thousands of Faithful Costa Ricans Started the Easter Season by Attending Ash Wednesday Mass

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – This morning marks the beginning of Lent for Catholics throughout the world. Thousands of Costa Ricans participated by attending Ash Wednesday mass.

Lent stretches through March and ends on Easter Sunday, which falls on April 5 this year.

One of the main churches where this activity took place was the Metropolitan Cathedral, which was filled with the faithful culminating with a cross of ashes on their foreheads. The Mass was presided by the Bishop of San José, José Rafael Quirós.

Father Alfonso Mora, assistant Episcopal Vicariate, explains that during the Mass, a cross of ashes placed on the foreheads of the faithful, whose meaning is very special.

That ash is obtained from burning the blessed palms used in the previous year on Palm Sunday.

Easter recalls the passion and death of Jesus Christ on the cross, when God sacrificed his only son to save mankind from sin. (ADN)
