The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – San José, our capital city, is among the 10 cities of the world that are part of the program, Citizens Online, that recently launched the popular mobile application, Waze. The initiative was officially announced last night in New York, United States.

Sites like Yahoo and The Next Web reported that the list includes other cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Jakarta, Tel Aviv, Boston, Florida, Utah, Los Angeles and New York.

On its official website, the popular said, “The online program brings cities and citizens to answer the question: What is happening and where? We exchange publicly available incident reports and road closures, resulting in one of the most clear and profound descriptions of the situation on the road.”

“With the addition of data from the city, wazers will create safer roads. People will have more knowledge about maintenance work, flooding or anything else that may cause delays. For cities, the real-time information for drivers is essential; no one knows more about what happens in a city than the people living there,” Waze further explains on its website.

This application is a world leader in social navigation systems. Its success has been related to the ease of deployment on mobile devices, interaction between users and the large amount of options for reporting traffic. Currently, you can get the app for free on both Apple iOS or Android operating systems.

There is no confirmation that the work in San Jose will be done jointly with the Traffic Police or the Municipal Police of the capital.
