A new regulation that would extend the expiry date of cement (currently set at 45 days) will allow importing and selling cement at 20 percent below current prices, said the JCB Group and a member of Cementos Sinocem, Juan Carlos Bolanos,on Thursdayโ€™sย Nuestra Voz.

The Chinese Capital company is interested in importing cement into the country, which is currently not possible due to technical barriers with the existing regulation.

However, the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Trade (MEIC) is working on modifying the legislation, in conjunction with the Institute of Technical Standards of Costa Rica (INTECO), the Costa Rican Chamber of Construction (CCC) and the National Laboratory Materials and Structural Models (LANAMME), among other representatives.

Bolanos said the reduction in price could be more if they can increase the volume of cement imports.

According to the head of the Libertarian Movement, Otto Guevara, who has been one of the people pushing for these changes in the regulations, the new standard would be ready in the coming days.
