The Costa Rica News (TCRN) โ€“ The Standardization Technical Institute of Costa Rica (Inteco) announced that five companies will be declared carbon neutral.

Inteco, one of accredited bodies to declare a business as carbon neutral, said in a statement that Asuaire Travel, Caribbean Hospitality, CoopeAnde No.1 RL, Popular Pensions and the Chamber of Exporters Association of Costa Rica (CADEXCO) will receive the seal.

โ€œDomestic companies are really committed and making big progress in measuring and reducing their carbon footprints,โ€ said the director of Inteco, Mauricio Cรฉspedes.

The manager explained that the verification of carbon emissions is a โ€˜systematic, independent and documented processโ€™ to evaluate the greenhouse gases to see if they meet the criteria given by MINAE in 2011.

These companies join nine others who during 2013 also received the seal, among them are: BAC San Josรฉ, Purdy Motor, Distribution Florex Central, Cafรฉ Britt, Environmental Services and Travel Excellence Geocycle SAG.

Costa Rica has proposed to be carbon neutral by 2021, which means it will offset all carbon emissions from its economy and its citizens.

โ€œCarbon Neutralityโ€ is the practice of balancing the equivalent emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to equal amounts of oxygen so as to not contribute to global warming. (ACAN-EFE)
