Fine Reduction Available for Those Unable to File Their Costa Rica Taxes Yesterday

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Despair, anguish and anger: Many Costa Rican taxpayers who tried to submit their income taxes yesterday can related to these feelings when they were unable to access the Ministry of Finance’s website.

According to the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Costa Rica, William Smith, the tax administration should have mercy and receive today’s tardy statements without warranting fine.

However, the Director of Taxation, Carlos Vargas, has denied that the EDDI-7 system with which income statements are submitted dropped the ball on taxpayers. Because of this, he confirmed that there will not be an extension for the deadline.

Vargas said that you can still file your return and opt for a reduction of the penalty, which knocks it down about 80%.

Those who do not file an income statement shall pay a fine of about 200,000 colones (about $400 USD), which is the same as average month’s wages for many Costa Ricans. (El Financiero)
