Energy Efficiency Conference a Great Success

Education and awareness can create sustainability

The international Energy Efficiency Conference was a great success, judging by the turnout and the response of those who attended.  The Conference was held on Sept. 30th at the Real Intercontinental Hotel, and was a quality event in every way.

There were a variety of speakers and major exhibitors, all bringing attention to the important issues in the area of energy efficiency, power generation, and regulations.  The presenters included Roberto Jimenez from the Regulatory Authority for Public Service (ARESEP), Armando Cruz from the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE), and Ronnie Rodriguez representing the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications (MINAE).

The Conference was organized by Energy Economics with their primary objective being energy, social, economic, and environmental sustainability in Costa Rica.  Promoting projects, training, and activities in solar energy all contribute to generating theoretical and practical knowledge on how to achieve these goals.

According to WWF, “Costa Rica has established itself as a world leader in renewable energy, with considerable investment in developing and expanding its capacity in renewable energy, especially wind.  Costa Rica is the best positioned Latin American country in the Energy Sustainability Index”.  Latin America generates approximately 7% of the world’s electricity, yet nearly 65% of that comes from renewable resources.

The president of Energy Economics SRL, Daniel Yepez, sees the Costa Rican market as an important sector in the region.  More financial incentive is required to achieve energy efficiency at a country-wide level.  “Thanks to programs which offer collection agreements with the National Power and Light Company (CNFL), and which allow the end-user to pay through their electric bill, we will effectively penetrate the national market,” said Daniel Yepez.  Public education is one of the essential goals of the company, and one of the primary objectives for hosting the Energy Efficiency Conference.
