The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Christmas trees used by the residents of Desamparados during December will become compost for parks throughout the canton, through an initiative of the municipality.
The City of Desamparados allied with the company Farmagro to collect dry Christmas trees and recycle the lumber.
The goal of this alliance is to prevent this perfectly reusable resource from reaching the landfill. Farmagro is in charge of crushing the trunks and using the material derived from the process to make organic fertilizer.
The mayor, Maureen Fallas, said collecting Christmas trees began on January 5 and will run until January 16.
Desamparados residents can leave their Christmas tree outside their homes on days when garbage is collected normally.
“The collection of trees is after 2 pm; we are devoting an additional crew to perform this extra service during the month of January,” explained Fallas.
The municipality of Desamparados also seeks to generate environmental awareness among its contributors to this initiative.
According to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) in Desamparados there are 208,000 inhabitants, spread over 60,144 homes. (Amelia Rueda)
