The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – From now until January next year, more than 7,000 people in 3,000 Costa Rican households in the country will be consulted for their uses, preferences and even money investing in culture.

The National Survey of Culture (ENC) wants to know the habits, practices and cultural consumption of the Ticos. According to the Ministry of Culture, this data collection in the country is unique in its breadth, although there are previous experiences.

Culture Minister, Manuel Obregón, stated that the study responds to the need to broaden the concept of culture and integrate statistical information on the cultural sector in order to have data to support effective decision making for the national culture.

The study contains questions about music, training and cultural practices as well as Costa Rican traditions. There will also be sections on audiovisual and cinema, television, radio and video games, publications (books, newspapers and magazines), events and cultural spaces.

It is intended to measure accessibility to culture, every two years and generate policies that favor communities and to create and strengthen cultural projects and programs. Obregon said the survey will feed information systems such as the Satellite Account of Culture (CSC), which shows culture as an engine of development.

There is a precedent on the Culture Module which was included in the 2012 National Household Survey and the National Survey on Cultural Habits and Practices 2010, but these were never as wide as the current study.

The officials responsible for carrying out the surveys will visit communities across the country and are identified with official badges and vests survey.
