The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Costa Rican government announced that it has reorganized the bulk of its security forces in order to have better ratings for the agents and their pay scales.
Security Minister, Mario Zamora, said today in a press conference that this restructuring will enter into force on January 1, 2014.
Costa Rica will now only have five types of police subordinates degrees, unlike the 92 that existed before.
According to him, each of the 92 classes had different salaries police, and private benefits, making it difficult to establish policies to equalize wages and have a strict order.
With the restructuring, Costa Rica cops now have ratings of Agent 1, Agent 2, Warrant Officer 1, Warrant Officer 2, and Officer.
The minister said the reorganization also involves wage increases for most of the police, but did not specify a percentage on average.
However, he did say that the lowest wage receive by a member of the security forces will be at the of Agent 1 level of 429,646 colones (about $850) a month, while the highest amount to be paid is 784,370 colones (about $1,553).
This change does not affect the ranks and grades of senior officers.
Costa Rica, a country of 4.7 million inhabitants and abolished its army in 1948, has a public force of about 14,000 policemen. (EFE)
