    Costa Rica Anti-drug Programs A huge Success

    Costa Rica drugs and trafficking has been a major focus for the Chinchilla administration and the programs implemented have been tremendously successful.

    The antidrug authorities of Costa Rica reports that during 2012 they seized a total of 15.5 tons of cocaine.

    The Security Ministry said in a statement that with 15.5 tons in 2012, cocaine seizures have already reached the 26.8 tons under the current government administration.

    During 2012, the Drug Control Police dismantled a total of 109 drug trafficking organizations, of which 12 had international connections and 97 were employed locally.

    As for heroin, officers seized 13 kilos, while the amount of marijuana was 5.7 tons.

    Furthermore, 957,482 marijuana plants were destroyed in mountainous areas of the country.

    The Security Ministry data show that during this year operatives arrested 42,439 people involved in drug trafficking, seized 62 guns, 108 vehicles, 127.9 million colones (about $ 250,000) and 5.7 million.

    Drug trafficking has been a major concern in recent years for governments in Costa Rica, Central American country that authorities say is part of a bridge between drug producers in southern Europe and northern large consumers.

    According to police information, this country has become a warehouse and logistics site related bands cartels in Mexico and Colombia.
