The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Costa Rica authorities arrested five Colombians, allegedly members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and 35 weapons were seized and 492 kilos of cocaine, officials said.

The director of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), Francisco Segura, said today in a press conference that the Colombian and Nicaraguan, whose identities have not been released, were detained for three raids today.

Segura said the investigation began two weeks ago when the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) warned them about the operations of this group in San Jose.

The OIJ seized 492 kilos of cocaine and hours later at dawn made three raids in San Jose in which they arrested the men and confiscated their arms. The weapons had documentation, but some were modified to convert some them into assault rifles and imported into the country in a lawful manner through an armory.

In total, agents seized 27 rifles, seven pistols, a revolver and a silencer. The hypothesis of the authorities indicates that this group is a associated with FARC and had ties to drug gangs in Mexico, where they planned to send the shipment of drugs and possibly weapons.

The authorities confirmed that five Colombians had legal immigration status in Costa Rica and one of them had lived in the country for four years.

The prosecutor, Carlos Jimenez, said that the five Colombians and Nicaraguan arrested will be charged for drug and weapons trafficking. (EFE)
