Coast Guard Busts Fishermen Attempting to Use Live Bait in Golfo Dulce; One Surprised With Warrant

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Costa Rica National Coast Guard stopped a fishing boat carrying several types of live bait, which is illegal in the waters of Golfo Dulce.

Inside the boat was a minor, along with other adults, who were preparing to catch different species of fish using the live bait.

Under current legislation, live bait for fishing at sea is only allowed outside and not in the Gulf, because it affects protected species such as turtles, sailfish and marlin.

The Security Ministry spokesman, Carlos Hidalgo, explained that the Coast Guard will continue patrolling the coasts to stop other vessels of this type, especially with the high volume of people on the Pacific coast during the New Year.

The Coast Guard also checked another fishing boat called the Luz Marina, surprising a fisherman who had an arrest warrant.

The man taken in for the warrant is a Costa Rican named Vazquez, who has a pending criminal case for resisting arrest. (ADN)
