The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Claro and Telefónica companies won a contract to install broadband in schools in rural communities in the north of Costa Rica, near the border with Nicaragua, reported the Telecommunications of Costa Rica (Sutel).

Sutel said in a statement that a total of five projects would benefit 40,000 students from 500 schools in the communities of Guatuso, Los Chiles, Upala, Sarapiqui, and San Carlos.

The investment required in the five projects will be approximately $ 13.8 million from the National Telecommunications Fund (Fonatel).

Last July Sutel awarded Telefónica a project to bring the Internet to six rural communities in the province of Limón, in the Caribbean, which had been waiting ten years for access to these services.

Sutel data indicates that in 2010 only 5% of Costa Ricans had access to mobile broadband; for 2012 it rose 20%.

As for households with internet access, in 2010 the figure was 24% and for 2012 it increased to 47%. (EFE)
