    Central American Presidents Start Summit without Laura Chinchilla

    Nicaragua President, Daniel Ortega, opened the Summit of Heads of State of the Central American Integration System (SICA) XL last week, attended by four other Central American presidents, except for Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla.

    After welcoming their American colleagues in a ceremony at the House of Peoples, former Presidential Palace in Managua, Daniel Ortega opened the SICA summit.

    “This meeting has a very full agenda,” he told official media Nicaraguan First Lady Rosario Murillo, who holds 50% of the power in the country, delegated by Daniel Ortega, shortly before the start of the meeting.

    Chinchilla delegated chancellor Castillo receiving the rotating presidency, under protest Nicaragua is in border disputes with Costa Rica in front of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
    In addition to Nicaragua and Costa Rica, the SICA has as full membership with Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama, and the Dominican Republic as a partner.
    The Dominican Republic has put forward a request during the regular session that wants to be a full member of SICA.

    The purpose of SICA, is to expand and consolidate greater political interaction, economic, cultural, educational and business with the countries of that region.

    The summit involving leaders of Guatemala, Otto Perez Molina, El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, Honduras, Porfirio Lobo, Panama, Ricardo Martinelli, plus host Ortega.
    Belize is represented by the concurrent ambassador to Guatemala and Nicaragua, Alfredo Martinez.

    According to the Government of Managua, observers included delegations from South Korea, United States, Spain, France, Japan, Peru, Russia and Taiwan.
