Brazilian Police Will Use a Mask Inspired by Darth Vader for the World Cup

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) - The police units of the twelve brazilian counties near where next June ‘s World Cup will be held, acquired a mask inspired by the character Darth Vader of the Star Wars movie to equip their riot control agents.

The mask, besides causing a psychological effect, protects against gas attacks, withstands high temperatures, has a viewfinder that does not tarnish and has a voice amplifier, was presented today at the International Fair of Public Safety and Corporate LAAD, the largest of its kind in Latin America, which opened Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro.

The mask will be used by riot police in potential protests which might occur during the the World Cup, according to Welster Itage company, which is responsible for the importation of equipment that was manufactured in the United States with the assistance of the U.S. government.

According to trade analyst company , Beni Iachan , “the aim is to provoke a psychological effect on the protesters or other citizens.”

Iachan told Efe that “the company has already delivered 1,500 masks to Brazil and will deliver another 3,700 before the Worldcup will start.” They are designed „with a very flexible rubber and are resistant to 1000 degrees Celsius but don´t mist up. ”

With these new masks Police expects to “inhibit the black blocks”, a group that advocates the use of violence in protests and who starred in several incidents in demonstrations for better public services.

The masks have a hydration tube for professional use and an air cleaner, which can couple an external oxygen pipe.

The teams that riot security forces may face, are the biggest attraction of the second edition of LAAD Security.

With over 160 exhibitors from 17 countries, the fair opened its gates Tuesday in downtown Rio Exhibition Centre to present mainly security tools for riot, many with an eye to the next big event to be held in Brazil the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Rio Olympics.
